Disabled Veteran

I need help to pay off medical bills and past due bills. I am a 100% disabled veteran and single mother of one and have no outside insurance. I recently had to have surgury to have full hysterectomy due to tumors and since the veterans wouldn't cover it and my $900 a month disability check is too much to qualify for state medical help i'm falling deeper and deeper into debt. I currently owe close to 15k and am afraid I'm going to lose my one and only car that I need to get to my appts over an hour away (as thats the closest veterans hospital to me). I despretely need help to get caught up and get my credit restored so my daughter and I can try to start our own small business and stay in the black. I've been fighting the veterans administration since 1991 when I got chemical burns in desert storm for some assistance as I was forced to drop out of college due to my severe asthma from the burns. I truely believe there are still decent people out there willing to help someone who truely needs it and am even willing to pay back the money over time if I can just get out of this hole we are stuck in. Thank you for taking the time to even read this.

I should have updated since my initial post but I am trying to work out a payment program with them but the problem is I am already paying on a student loan and it already taking away my money to pay for my medications as I dont have any RX coverage ( I am looking into a program to help with that locally as well currently). Again the problem is just lack of enough funds.

Also, in reply to AmberSmith, (sorry so very late) yes, there are certain instances in which a problem could develope while in the service that is NOT connected such as was my case with the Cysts in my bladder. But since they are always present and started while active duty (including the treatments for it) it is considered a non service connected disability as it was not caused by something that happened to me while in. My Asthma on the other hand was caused from chemical burns and though they have since decided it IS service connected I am still fighting them for a full rating. I get 100% from SSD and have since about 5 years into my case. Magically they too have since LOST all my medical records in buffalo NY too but say it is not related. I find that hard to believe.

This is why after several trys to get my student loans taken care of I've been unable too even with other doctor notes, neither the VA nor SSD can or will provide the doctor's statements and records to prove I have been disabled in full since 1991 and had to leave school because I couldn't even walk up a set of stairs to make it to a class nor sit through a whole one without having an attack at that time since it was so crazy out of control.

Again, I appologize for not being here but I have been very busy trying like mad to get myself out of this hole I got thrown into and with being in the hospital twice this past month due to the flu with my asthma things are getting hectic again but I am trying hard to keep faith and work on what I am able too. I NEED to find out how to get a social worker of some sort to help me with all this. I would appreciate any programs anyone knows of that offer that type of assistance in the central NY area. (Near Syracuse) Thank you all once again.

If you had surgery at a nonprofit hospital many have special programs to pay the bills of individuals who do not have the ability to pay.  Have you checked to see if the hospital where you had surgery had such a program?  If the hospital has a social worker or ombudsman, I would start there.  Good luck...

This is news to me. So you are saying you can still get some monetary compesation even if it is NOT service related?

He Naijomii, I also am a disabled veteran. I was confused reading your message. If your 100% service connected, you would be recieving alot more than 900 a month. Check out the Veterans Benefit Board on the net. You need to investigate all the programs va has to offer. You should contact a veteran service officer. email if I can help any further. good luck jt.berry@yahoo.com

PS (for Elaine of TSA) I just got the service connected rating several months ago and am still fighting it with my DAV advocate, she is a blessing no matter what (but I did still check out that link, thanks!). I'd also like to thank arthurlsmith and ekikaseven for taking the time to post their comments as well.

Jazzytruth, It is only 30% veterans (Service Connected), I am and have been fighting this since 1991, and 100% according to state, thus why it is only around 900 dollars a month. Also, they do not cover medical costs for unconnected surguries or certain women's health issues such as the tumors I had to have removed resulting in the full hysterectomy. The problem is that both my service records and my state disability health records have gone missing in buffalo yet they keep telling me they have nothing to do with each other and its just a coincidence. Still due to the fact both sets of records have gone MIA and all I have are my current records its slowing the process to a near stop. I do have someone advocating for me to try and help me get it up to 100% through the veterans administatration but its over 5 years together so far and all we are up to is the 30. However at least they have finally admitted it is indeed service connected so thats the first step she says.

If you are a 100% DAV you wouldn't to pay for your medical cost. Secondly your monthly income would be over $900.00 you stated. Tell the truth!!!!

There have been changes to the previous guidelines for benefits for Gulf War Veterans. See the following link which is linked to the VA.Gov web site. If it has been a while since you received your disability rating, you may wish to do some research and see if some of your illnesses are now realized to be service connected. If you believe that they may be, then sign on with a VSO advocate outside of the VA to help you file a claim. Blessings, Elaine

If your disability is not service connected you get $910.00 a month (This is what I get). If it is service connected then it is around $2600. It sounds like your disability was determined to be not service connected. If you think it was service connected then you need to have it changed. I am not sure how you go about changing it to service connected. Art

Hi 'N', You stated that you are 100% disabled veteran. In that case your VA check should be around $2600+ dollars a month, not $900. Contact the DAV or the VA to find out why you aren't receiving the rate you should be receiving for being 100% disabled. Someone has obviously done you a great injustice here. I wish you the best.
